Vintage Botanicals – Simple Stories
Hi there Magpies, Philippa here today sharing my first projects as a member of the Hey Little Magpie Creative Team and it’s great to be here!
I love flowers and plants so the beautiful Vintage Botanicals Collection from Simple Stories couldn’t be more perfect for me!
For my first layout I used the Elements paper as a starting point and punched 17 x 1.5″ circles from the 2 x 2 squares. I placed these in a large circle on my cardstock background and machine stitched them in place then gently lifted the edges.
I added watercolour to the centre of my circle before matting my photo and backing with the Love & Sunshine paper. My journalling tag is made from the reverse side of the paper and I embellished some of the punched circles with Chipboard Elements . I added Bits and Pieces from the Die Cuts and fussy cut butterflies from the Elements paper.
I spent most of the Easter weekend in the garden enjoying the sunshine and we took lots of photos amongst the cherry blossom!
For my second project I’ve done something a bit different! I love rummaging in second hand bookshops and I’ve been hoarding a beautifully bound old ledger that measures 12.5 x 8. One of my many hobbies is researching family history and I’m fortunate enough to have inherited a lot of vintage photos.
I started by painting a thin layer of white acrylic paint over the page but gesso would have worked just as well. I didn’t want to totally obliterate the old print!
To fit the vintage theme I added a torn strip of the Collect Moments paper and machine stitched it to the outside edge of the page – not easy!! I added some stamping in Frayed Burlap Distress Oxide ink and tucked Bits and Pieces from the Die Cuts under the torn edge.
I mounted the photo of my Dad and his baby brother on tissue paper and pieces from the A and B sides of Collect Moments and added stickers from the 12 x 12 Combo Sticker sheet. I drew and watercoloured the flower above the cluster and added colour to the edge of the page
Finally I added some hidden journalling in the little pocket which is a copy of my Dad’s handwriting. I think I inherited my love of gardening, plants and nature from him! Maybe this ledger will become my art journal!
I hope I’ve shown that this collection can be really versatile. See you on the 20th when I’ll be back with more projects using Vintage Botanicals!
