Under Sea Adventures – Echo Park – Part One – Amy Kattenbelt

Hello Magpies, Amy here sharing with you a mixed media layout that uses a collection called ‘Under Sea Adventures‘ by Echo Park Paper. Its full of bright primary colours and plenty of fish, beach and sea themed icons.

Sailing

Because I wanted to create a layout that was very heavy on the mixed media front, I selected a piece of 12×12 Foundations Paper by Vicki Boutin as my base layer. It has been specially created so that you do not need to gesso the card prior to using wet medium.

To create my layout I used the Vicki Boutin Watercolour set, and painted bands of blues. I got progressively darker down my layouts, and I dried the paint with a heat gun between the layers to make the 5 colour changes stand out rather than bleed into each other. There are 3 fab blues in the palette and I used all of these on this background, watering down the darkest and lightest blue to make my 4th and 5th hues. I added plenty of water and tilted the paper whilst the pain was still wet to create drips. I also added splatters of the paint to each section once they had dried.

Next I added some shaped paper pieces to my background. I used four of the blue patterned papers, and a 1″ circle punch. I cut the circles in half to create semi circles and stuck them to the lower part of my painted background to abstractly represent the sea. I also die cut from cloud shapes from white textured card and stuck these on the top half to represent the sky.

I am using a photo of my eldest son sailing. I printed the photo out onto 6×4 paper but then I fussy cut my son and his boat out.

Next I cut cut a sailing boat shape out of some of the patterned papers. I chose to avoid the blue papers and picked green, yellow, red and orange so they would stand out against my background. To create the boat I simply drew it free hand on some waste paper until I was happy with it, cut out the segments and used them as a template to cut my coloured pieced. I placed these pieces on my layout on top of the sea section of my background. I used foam dots in areas to give the sails a 3D effect. I also found the perfect sticker from the sticker sheet, a wheel, which I added to my boat. I added a few phrase stickers too.

I placed lots of the fish and sea creature stickers from the 12×12 sticker sheet into my sea area. I also added some of the tiny round starfish stickers, and then added some of the blue and white glitter enamel dots that are new to Hey Little Magpie. They really add a lovely sparkly touch to the layout.

My layout was finished off by adding a bold black title. I used Simple Stories Color Vibe Foam Alphabet Stickers. I finished the layout off with another phrase sticker, a date stamp and a few more sea creature stickers and glitter enamel dots.

Thank you for taking the time to come and read how I created my layout. I would love to see any Sea themed layouts you have created! I will be back in a few weeks to share another layout idea using this collection. Until then, Take Care and Stay Safe
