Star Gazing
It all started with this layout – my love for the Aurora Collection by Basic Grey. I bought the collection pack on a bit of a whim really – it was slightly different to my usual style of papers and I just fancied a bit of a challenge to take me out of my comfort zone. The Collection Pack includes 12 double sided patterned papers, a 12×12 Element Sticker sheet and a 12×12 Alphabet Sticker sheet.
Usually I love to mix collections – pull a bit of this, add in scraps, etc etc, but on this occasion I challenged myself to use the collection pack – the whole thing, and largely stick to JUST what was in the pack. Now, that isn’t strictly possible for me, as I love to use lots of small embellishments and create clusters on my layouts, but other than embellishments, I barely added anything at all.
I made the layout above ‘Sandi & Randi’, for a challenge (so I should say that I have uploaded and shared this layout a couple of months prior to this blog post going live), but looking back at that layout inspired me to scrap the rest of the photos from this event, and to use the remainder of the Collection Pack. The papers were so perfect for these photos, as it was a 1950s retro style dinner party.
I’ve used an enormous photo for this layout ‘Aint that a Bite’, but I had a few other photos of the food served that night, but I couldn’t fit them on the layout and I didn’t want to turn it into a double, so I made the big photo into a pocket. There are actually six additional photos, mounted in pairs back to back. I made tabs with a circle punch and some washi tape.
The evening was quite photo heavy as we set up a makeshift photobooth, and we had loads of fun when the camera was set to go off too quicky so we didn’t have enough time for ‘costume changes’ in between flashes! It made for a lot of fun photos but also a lot of rejects! I picked the best ones and lined them up across a double layout.
Working with a Collection Pack made making lots of layouts easy as I wasn’t constantly searching through my papers trying to find the perfect thing to use. It made me really look at both sides of the papers and use what I had sparingly so that I could stretch the collection into as many layouts as possible. I managed to make four single layouts and two double layouts, so that’s eight pages in total – not bad for only twelve 12×12 papers to start with…and there’s not a scrap left!
