Playing with Mixed Media
Hi Magpies, Julie back again sharing with you my love of mixed media. When I first started scrapbooking, around 9 years ago, mixed media was more for art journaling & seemed very dark with dull colours of brown, black etc but it’s really come into it’s own in the last few years & a trend I’m fully on board with & one that I seem to add to every page I now do. So when the Vicki Boutin Mixed Media collection came into the shop it was definitely one I could see myself loving & I was not disappointed. There’s something for everyone in the collection, paper, stickers, paint, art crayons, glaze & so much more, in fact you’re spoilt for choice. I was very lucky to have some of it brought for me for my birthday so I just added a few more bits to it for my blogpost.
My first page ‘seriously, do your own thing, Hustle’ is using the Reactive tissue paper. Now to begin with I ordered the tissue not having a clue as to what I was going to do with it!!!! So onto good old youtube I went to get a few ideas & found a few things to do with it & let me tell you it was SOOOO much fun, just like being a child again & really easy to do. I punched various sizes of circles out of the pink, yellow & orange tissue & sprayed a piece of watercolour paper with water & scattered the tissue circles around the top & right hand side, over lapping some of them. I then sprayed again with water & the magic just happens, the colours from the tissue bleed into the cardstock leaving a lovely water colour effect, I speeded mine up with a air dryer but think you’d get more intense colours if you left it to dry naturally. I then added some stamped circles, in the same colours, & some ink splatters. I sewed this sheet of paper, at an angle, onto fine apple paper from Amy Tan on a whim collection. I made a photo mat using a cardstock tag, stickers from the Vicki Boutin watercolour sticker book & embellishments out of the Amy Tan cardstock die cuts & accents & phrases stickers. I finished the page with some sequins & a touch of hand sewing.
For my second page I went all out on a sheet of black cardstock. Using the acrylic paints I first dry brushed some pink, blue & yellow paint onto the cardstock just in stripes. I then diluted blue, pink, yellow, white & black paint & splattered this all over the page, drying between each colour so as not to mix them. I hasten to add I did this in the garden, on the grass, as it’s VERY messy & yes the grass now has a fab multi coloured patch J When coming to make up my layout I decided the paper was just too bold to use the whole sheet so I tore a strip to go down the middle & punched out some circles. The background paper is one from my stash & I added some inking through a stencil & some stamping & a touch of texture paste. I printed out the photos adding a different filter to each one & backed them with some black cardstock & distressed the edges. I added them down my page & sewed in yellow around each one. I added the circles to the edges & sewed through each one of those & added a few embellishments around my page again from the Amy Tan ‘on a whim’ collection as the colours went so well.
For my final layout ‘Dream’ I’ve tried to show the softer option of mixed media, that it doesn’t have to be too messy with loud colours. I first inked & stamped the feathers. I scribbled some of the art crayons onto a messy mat, sprayed with water & laid my watercolour paper on top mopping up the colours. I then stamped when dry & die cut them out, the stamps & dies come together in one pack, perfect for this. For some of the other feathers I drew directly onto the stamp with the crayons then sprayed with water & stamped giving a soft watercolour look. I added some inked splotches to my white cardstock background using the art crayons & the packaging technique & added a few splatters of ink also. On the top rectangle of watercolour paper, I also added some silver texture glaze. I sewed a messy circle on this piece of paper & distressed on 3 edges. I added that to the white cardstock tucking a doily & some inked gauze underneath to add some texture. I made a photo mat, out of papers in my scraps box & wrapped some embroidery silk around the one side & attached these to the feathers & added a couple of small tags to add the date. I finished the layout with some fab enamel hearts from Illustrated Faith.
I really hope you have enjoyed my introduction into mixed media as much as I have had making these layouts & I’ll be back next month with 3 more layouts using the same products in various ways.
Until next time XOXO
