Oh So Special – a look at using Speciality Papers

Hey Magpies, Niki here with you today.  Today I’m sharing a few layouts made with the very beautiful Documentary collection by Dear Lizzy. Within the collection are a number of speciality papers. Lots of collections have these at the moment and I picked up six (yes six!!) just in the Documentary collection.  They are stunning designs and are definitely very special. But I am guilty of often keeping these papers and not actually using them, becuase they are too special, lol!  So for today’s post, I challenged myself to get them used and to share how I used them with you.

Take a look at these beauties:

Special papers

‘Celebrate’ is kraft paper with gold foiled banners all over. ‘XOXO’ is clear acetate with gold foil lines.

Special papers1

‘Best 5 Minutes’ is gold foiled numbers on clear acetate. ‘Stargaze’ is gold foil stars on an aqua wash vellum

Special papers2

‘Pretty Please’ is a sheet of journaling cards on black card with gold foil detail, and ‘Heart of Gold’ is also a sheet of journaling cards but on clear acetate with gold foil detail.

The first thing I did was to decide what sheets I was going to use as a whole and which sheets I was going to cut up. I chopped up the journaling cards as per the designs, and cut the ‘XOXO’ lines acetate into 6×4 blocks.  The others I left whole so that I had the option to use them as full sheets if possible or to chop up later.

For my first layout I’ved used gelatos onto a white cardstock background, two of the 6×4″ pieces of ‘XOXO’, both of which I cut in half longways and made into long strips (they are actually cut in two on my layout but you can’t see it d’oh!)  I’ve also used two of the ‘Heart of Gold’ journaling cards, as well as other papers and embellishments in the Documentary collection.

For this layout I’ve used some of the Stargaze vellum and one of the 6×4 journaling cards from ‘Heart of Gold’. I tend to use the speciality papers as layers under my photos, as well as embellishments where I can.

For this layot I’ve cut out some of the elements from the ‘Pretty Please’ paper 9(the black/gold frame and the ‘pretty please’ words) and used one of the 6×4″ pieces from ‘XOXO’

I tore paper for this layout – some of the Stargaze vellum and I’ve also used the heart journaling card from ‘Heart of Gold’ and a polaroid frame cut from ‘Pretty Please’ The word ‘want’ at the top is also cut from the Pretty Please paper.

I think this one is my favourite. The background is a whole sheet of acetate. I was concerned about scrapping directly on to acetate as it’s seethrough, so putting it in an album would mean I would see the other layout in the page protector through the acetate, thus ruining the effect. I considered sticking it to white card but was worried about seeing the tape/adhesive. So eventually I had a brainwave – I will simply place a plain sheet of white card in the page protector behind the acetate. No sticking required and therefore problem solved. It concerns me that such a simple solution too me so long to figure out!!   As well as the full sheet of the numbered acetate as my background I used three of the journaling cards from ‘Pretty Please’ I also cut the heart from one of these too. The whole layout is just black and gold with a black and white photo so the result is quite striking in real life.

For this layout I’ve just used a journaling card from ‘Heart of Gold’ and one from ‘XOXO’

Now that ‘Celebrate’ paper was giving me some trouble. I am not a big fan of kraft backgrounds but I really wanted this paper to be the main focus of my layout. In the end I cut it into two triangles and layered it on to another background sheet – this still made it the main focus of my layout but there wasn’t so much of it that it was kraft overload! It also means I have some leftover to use on other layouts.  I’ve also used the Stargaze vellum and ‘happy dance’ is cut from of the journaling cards from ‘Pretty Please’.

And finally, after 7 layouts with this collection I didn’t have much leftover!! This one uses up the last few bits – I cut those circles from a previous sheet of patterned paper (the other part of that sheet is used in the ‘To the Finish Line’ layout above,) and after dropping a few Heidi Swapp colourshine colours onto a white background I layered them up. One of the final journaling cards from ‘Pretty Please’ is under my photos and I also used the camera card from ‘Heart of Gold’. There’s also a couple of Stargaze vellum strips on two edges of my layout.
