More Color Kaleidoscope from Vicki Boutin

Hey Magpies, Rachel here again with some more Color Kaleidoscope from Vicki Boutin. I am loving this collection so much and my layouts concentrate on using the wonderful, 12×12 Mixed Media Backgrounds Paper Pad. Don’t be fooled by the name, it’s not paper at all, it’s a nice thick cardstock which is perfect as the base of your LO. It also has a very cool texture to it, different from standard cardstock, it’s lush! In the pad you get 3 each of 12 different designs. I love that you get 3 of each design because it means I’ll actually use them and not just keep them for best. If there were 2 of each I might use some but I think I’d end up mostly hoarding them but for some reason, 3 of each means I started using them all straight away! I love that, I want to use them, they’re fabulous! Also, I hope there will be another Vicki Boutin Collection along soon and another backgrounds pad to buy!
I am finding this whole Color Kaleidoscope collection very usable and fitting for any type of photo. It’s not themed at all and it just fits everything I have tried so far. I am just randomly picking out photos from my box and they all work! The colours are gorgeous and all the ephemera and embellishments are just so usable. Vicki has worked wonders designing a great collection that will fit any theme.
Mixed Media is something I love, I have all the gear and no idea! I have ideas for something but it rarely works out for me IRL as it does in my head. So I try a lot and things don’t work. The Backgrounds Paper Pad makes it super simple to have a mixed media background, Vicki has done them all for you! I was just ripping out a sheet, choosing a photo and going. I found that layouts came together super fast using the backgrounds.
This layout started with a background from the pad and that is the orange, yellow, pink stripes. I didn’t do any of that, it was all done for me. I actually used a whole load of scraps from the latest collection from Heidi Swapp, Color Fresh behind my photo. That is another superb collection if you like bright colours, it’s lush too! I used a lot of the scraps I had from the Color Fresh 6×6 Paper Pad. My uses the word pretty from Jen Hadfield, Along the Way Gold Foam Thickers and the word hair is older Crate Paper Thickers. I had cut a bunch of hearts from the Paper Hearts paper for a LO I talked about on my March 2nd blog post and they were sitting on my desk. So I whacked them on here and then got out my sewing machine to sew them down. I am not joking when I say this LO came together in around 10 minutes, before I got the sewing machine out and then it took me about 30 minutes to use that. But the backgrounds make throwing LO’s together so easy and fast! The last touch was one of the stickers from the Color Kaleidoscope Sticker Book above my photo and some of the puffy hearts from the Puffy Thickers pack.

I have taken close-ups this month to show the details, see how cool the hearts look with that extra touch of sewing through the middle!

So I started with another sheet from my Backgrounds Pad and then layered a few papers from the 12×12 Paper Pad under my photo. My title came about because I had the Jen Hadfield, Along the Way Gold Foam Thickers sitting on my desk and I had been looking at the word pretty and wondering when I would ever use that. So I used it! I also used the word fun from the Puffy Thickers pack and then had to go digging to find something for dress and I found some ancient red glitter Thickers which worked. I dotted around some bits and bobs from the Chipboard Thickers including that awesome black arrow band at the bottom. This LO was done super fast, since I didn’t have to create the background myself, I just threw a few bits on top!

I can’t believe I even managed to pick up the cool holographic arrows in this photo! And the lush heart and heart arrow which are in the Puffy Thickers pack.

This circle background is also from the Backgrounds Pad and I had been tossing up whether to use the photo above on this page or the blue one I went with. So I had this sheet sitting out on my desk, so I used it! It didn’t need much embellishing so I just dug through the Icons Ephemera Die-Cuts and pulled out a few flowers to layer under my photo (often if I do that with ephemera I will cut it in half and save the other half to use another time). I popped a few pieces up on foam pads for dimension. Then I wanted to use the clouds that are in the Icons Ephemera but they needed a bit of oomph to help them show up. So I cut them out of the reverse of the Chasing Rainbows paper. I am a div though and I traced them the wrong way around, so they were backwards when I cut them D’oh! It didn’t matter, I used them anyway but it didn’t quite give the shadow I wanted (I was too lazy to cut them properly a second time!). My title is one from the Puffy Thickers pack and that bird is from the 6×12 Sticker sheet and I popped him up on foam as well. I decided I needed to add a border of Nuvo Crystal Drops at the end as well, so that finished things off for me.

The background sheet also has gold foil on it which looks amazing!

I managed to squeeze in one more layout using the background pad as well, just a real quick one, a photo on a background and then super quick embellishing! Honestly, this background pad makes it so fast to throw together a LO that looks like you’ve spent ages on. This one, my title uses some of the ephemera and some real old Thickers. Then I dotted around loads of stickers from all the various sticker sheets, the sticker book and I have now noticed that I need to put the date on that bottom sticker still!

You definitely need the Mixed Media Backgrounds Pad in your stash Magpies! I will see you later in the month with some more Color Kaleidoscope layouts, have a great April!
