Mixed Media with Wildflower & Honey | Amy Kattenbelt
Hello Magpies, Amy here sharing two mixed media layouts using Vicki Boutins Wildflower & Honey collection. I decided to create one layout in cools and greens that features a landscape themed photo and the other is a baby layout using all the warmer red, oranges and yellows of the collection. I love how they are so different from each other, yet can you spot the few similarities, for example the tiny little bees!
Layout One – Awesome place to live
I started with a sheet of white cardstock and used three colours of distress oxide sprays (mermaid lagoon, peacock feathers and cracked pistachio) to create a colourful background. This was my first time using these sprays and I have to say I loved them. The colours are very intense and it is easier to achieve the oxidisation effect than when i have used a similar technique with the distress oxide pads.
I trimmed the white card down by 1cm along each edge, and stuck it onto a piece of patterned paper. Then I used my sewing machine to stitch around the cardstock, varying between straight stitch and zig zag.
I used pieces from the Dies & Frames Ephemera pack and the Icons ephemera pack to decorate my layout, clustering them around the central photo and the bottom right corner. The leaf die cuts are some of my favourite from this collection.
I added some smaller stickers from the cardstock stickers for extra details. All the time, carefully selecting pieces that were either black and white, blues, or greens. I used the word ephemera ‘ so awesome’ to create my title. By carefully cutting apart the two words I was able to just use the one word ‘awesome’. Then I add smaller letter stickers to complete the title. Lastly I finished the layout with tiny some fussy cut bees from the Full Bloom paper and added some fine black ink splatters.
Layout Two – Hi, honey
My second layout used the same collection used the same collection, although this time I carefully selected the ephemera piece in the warmer tones. The collection has several pieces with a honey theme, and I thought this photo not only matched that theme but also the colours too.
I used the Vicki Boutin Power Pigments (Cherry Tart, Orange Slice, Sugared Strawberry and Crushed Pineapple) mixed with water to create matching colours to the flower die cuts. I painted the colours across the middle of a piece of cardstock. By painting the next colour before the previous colour was completely dry they blend in to each other, and I also tipped the card to created some drips.
Once the paint was dry, I used Vicki Boutin’s Gold Glaze through the honeycomb stencil.
I added a title ‘hi, honey’ from the puffy phrase thickers. Next I added some gold and black stars from the same pack. I finished the layout with some bees, this time sticker and die cuts, and some fine black splatters of ink.
Thanks for taking the time to look at my layouts. I hope maybe you are feeling inspired to create some pretty mixed media layouts too.
