Fresh Air – 49 & Market – Vintage Artistry Naturalist – Wendy Meffan

Hi Magpies! it’s Wendy here for my first December blog. This month I’m using 49 & Market Vintage Artistry Naturalist Collection, this is a beautiful natural collection of pastel colours which I felt would be perfect for my photos of outside activities. This collection has many 12×12 pattered papers with an overall background design. I decided to use the 12×12 Classified paper for my first layout with a larger photo .

I cut round the outline of the butterfly and leaf to the bottom left of the paper and decided to tuck my photo under it. I completely cut up the 12×12 Journal Cards paper and used one of the pieces to mat the photo. As Kirei was wearing a mustard coloured coat I was able to bring out the yellows of the collection!

I machine stitched around all the leaves on the paper to give texture and dimension. I also stitched around the edge of the layout. I had chosen two 12×12 sheets of the Classified paper so I used the second one and gutted it to create a yellow border around the layout having trimmed the first paper to 11.5 x 11.5 cm

The ephemera pack for this collection holds 93 pieces of ephemera so I was able to chose  a selection of different elements from it and create a cluster in the top right corner. I distressed the edges of all the chosen pieces, added some string to the tags and then attached them using foam pads.

Around the bottom right of the photo I added more pieces from the ephemera pack. I then punched two butterflies and used pearlised watercolours to paint them and then used foam pads to attach them to the layout. I journalled under the photo and added a date stamp.

Finally I added some older thickers for the title around the edge of the picture.

Layout 2

For this layout I wanted to show some of the other colours available from the collection so I chose to back the photo with the B side of the 12×12 Tattered Wings paper, this enabled me to bring in red to the layout. I started initially with a mixed media background using distress oxides.

I matted the photo twice and then cut strips from the 12×12 tattered Wings apper and the B side of the Classified paper. I also used one of the branding strips and a piece of the ephemera which was like a postcard to bring in another colour. I distressed all the edges and stuck them down and the positioned the photo above. I used some dies to create some leafy elements to tuck in around the photo.

I added a few more pieces from the ephemera pack and some of the chipboard stickers giving more dimension to the layout. I made a large cluster to the top left of the layout and again cut some leafy elements from the papers using dies. I chose a selection of ephemera from the pack and distressed all the edges and layered  them using foam pads.

I then decided I would connect the photo to the cluster so chose some more ephemera pieces and attached them below the cluster and above the photo connecting the two. Finally I added a couple more chipboard pieces.

This wasn’t my initial choice of collection and I had a few concerns about all the papers being quite patterned as pictures, however I love the layouts I have created and hope they will give you some inspiration for this beautiful collection.
