Colour schemes
When it comes to inspiration for a page, sometimes things just seem to fall into place and other times a little jumping point is required. If I need a little push in the right direction, I often use a colour scheme to help me on my way. I have a colours board on Pinterest where I keep a selection of gorgeous colour schemes to use for inspitation, and this month I decided to use one of them as a starting point for my pages. I chose an image which contained 3 main colours – hot pink, orange and yellow, along with black and white.
As luck (and a little bit of judgement) would have it, my last couple of boxes of goodies from the Hey Little Magpie shop have contained quite a number of items containing these colours. I pulled out several items to start off with – papers from the Shimelle collection, Basic Grey Highline, Echo Park Creative Agenda & MME Jubilee, alongside embellishments from MAMBI and Freckled Fawn.
I made this page first, using a funny phone snap of my daughter eating her breakfast the “alternative way”. In years to come I am sure she will find this photo both funny and embarrassing, but at the time she just went about her meal as though it was the done thing to lick your milk up from the table! I misted the background with a tone on tone shade and applied a mask from the Heidi Swapp stencil minis shape pack before adding a cluster of embellishment in the top corner.
These freckled fawn wood chip words are my new favourite product – I adore the flowing script font and the extra dimension they add to a page. I altered this one with some metallic pink mist to match it to my layout. Their glitter enamel stars are rather lovely too and this particular pack comes with yellow, orange and pink – it couldn’t be more perfect for this colour scheme!
I kept the colour balance in my second page quite different, focusing more on the white, pink & orange with just a hint of yellow and black. I love how when you play around with the same set of colours in different quantities you can get such a change in effect. This picture is from Easter, which seems an age ago now! The kids looked pretty cute with their bunny ears on, although my daughter wasn’t keen on keeping them on for long – just long enough for a quick photo! The yellow butterfly is from the Crate Notes & Things sticker sheet which also has some lovely bright pink accents – it’s funny how you find coordinating things in places you arent expecting – it would not have been my go to range for this bright colour scheme but the sheet was on my desk and so I spotted that actually some of it did match perfectly. That, I suppose, is the benefit of not tidying your desk!
Finally, this page, using a background paper that I would not have found in the shop if it hadn’t been for my fellow team members using it in their posts and drawing my attention to it. Basic Grey usually isn’t my first stop at the shop, but I just love this particular spotty sheet so much! I will definitely be making sure I keep an eye on their new releases from now on. Two photos, again from my phone, accompany a little bit of journalling about our daily morning routine.
This time I used embossing powder on the wood chip word and I love how it came out! The freckled fawn arrow paperclips have found their way on to a few of my pages recently – so easy to use and a nice big embellishent – you get a good amount for the money too. I’ve bought a few packs of My Mind’s Eye flair badges recently – they are chunky and bright and I think bigger than average – I do like to have embellishments in a variety of sizes.
That’s all from me today, see you next time!
