A Traveler’s Notebook Insert – Using Shine On by Amy Tangerine

Hi Magpies, it’s Caroline here with you again. Today I am sharing a traveler’s notebook insert made using the 12 x 12 paper pad from the Shine On collection by Amy Tangerine.
I love traveler’s notebooks and find them so useful for memory keeping my day to day stories. Those little things that I want to remember, which may not have an associated photo or don’t necessarily require a full 12 x 12 page. Working in this smaller format I also find that I get my memories recorded so much quicker. This makes them perfect for trips and days out.
At the moment I am using this gorgeous mint camera journal from the Journal Studio collection. It is currently holding a couple of dot grid notebooks, which I use for my daily journal, this mini book and a clear pouch. The pouch is great for holding photos, tickets, business cards etc that I have collected and are waiting to be scrapped.

Making the Notebook Insert

To make the traveler’s notebook insert I started by selecting seven different patterned papers from the paper pad. Plus a further paper, which would be used for the cover. I then cut each paper down to 21 x 22.4 cm. Folding the papers in half with a bone folder to create a sharp crease, leaving me with an insert measuring 21 x 11.2 cm.
Next I decided on the order I wanted the patterns to appear in the insert and trimmed down the inner pages so that they didn’t stick out too far. I chose to use stitching to bind the insert. So I used a binder clip to hold the papers in place, then pierced holes 1 cm apart down the spine. I used white embroidery floss for the stitching. Going up the length of the spine and then back down to make it really secure. I finished my insert by decorating the front cover with papers from the collection, fussy cutting out the camera and little white flowers.

I find the papers from the paper pads perfect for making traveler’s notebook inserts. As they are usually lighter weight than the double sided papers. For this insert I could have used staples, which I usually use when making my journal inserts. However stitching holds it all together more securely, as once an insert like this is completed, they can get quite chunky.

Decorating the Pages

To decorate the pages of the insert, I wanted to keep most of the embellishment flat so that it didn’t get too chunky too quickly. I mainly used the papers, die cuts and stickers from the Shine On collection. Along with a number of stamp sets from Elle’s Studio and a roller date stamp. I used both papers from the 12 x 12 paper pad and some of the single sheets. This was because I wanted to include some of the subtler b sides. As well as the gorgeous foiled vellum included in the collection and some plain vellum. Here are three of my favourite pages from the insert:

Family Fun

For my first page I wanted to pick up on the pink, yellow and teal in the centre of the flowers on the Breath paper. So I chose to mat my photo onto a piece of the Sprinkled paper. I then punched out a number of hexagons from both of these papers. Placing them in a strip on the left hand page. I used the label stamp from the Right Now stamp set to create three journaling blocks, using kraft paper. Then finished the page with a puffy heart and my title underneath the photo.

You Can Never Have Too Many Cuddles!

For my next page, the Love You Bunches paper was busier than I wanted for my photo. So I cut a piece of kraft paper and a piece of the b side of the Beautiful paper. I layered this up behind my photo so that the busier paper was only visible around the edge. I decided to use a piece from The Good Life cut apart sheet on the left hand page. Matting it on another piece of the kraft paper and placing this towards the centre of the page, with my journaling above. I added a banner flag, cut from the kraft paper and the b side to bring these elements across to the left hand page. I added my title with some letter stickers above the photo and the date to the bottom left corner. To finish the page, I added a fussy cut camera and some of the beautiful clear stickers from the sticker book.

Fame The Musical

My third page is actually the centre page of the insert, therefore the pattern goes all the way across the spread. I loved the pattern of the Bouquet paper so I had to use it for the centre page. The page features a trip to the theatre so I wanted to include the ticket. To do this, I cut a piece of the b side of the Love You Bunches paper. Cutting it large enough to create a pocket for the ticket to sit in. I attached this to the page using double sided tape. Leaving the top open so that the ticket could slide in and out. I placed my photo on top of the pocket. Layering it up with a smaller piece of the b side of the Surrounded by Love paper. As well as some strips from the Even Out paper. I also included a strip of kraft paper, so that I had somewhere away from the busy background to place my title. To finish off the page, I placed my journaling above the title, Then added a die cut, a kraft circle and a puffy heart.

I have been using this insert to document stories from December ’18 to February ’19. It currently has nine completed pages, with space for another five stories from February. Here are the remainder of the completed pages:
